Acts 1:9-11

After Jesus commissioned His disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit to empower them in Acts 1:4-8, it says in verses 9-11:

     And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

     And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was departing, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them;

     And they also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky?  This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

Luke (the human writer of Acts) recorded a similar scene in Chapter 24:1-7 of his gospel account.  This time the women followers of Jesus gazed at the empty tomb of their Lord, when suddenly two men in dazzling white clothing asked them a question not unlike the one of Acts 1:11 – “Why do you seek the living One among the dead?”  And then they told the women about Jesus:

     He is not here, but He is risen.  Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee,

     Saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again” (Lk. 24:6-7).

Two similar scenes of angels as messengers of the great works of Jesus to His followers – His death for sinful men; His resurrection from the dead; His ascension into heaven; and His future return!  And we have it recorded for us in God’s holy word, the Bible.  Do we believe it, including His future return?  Those events mean our salvation, our expectation of heaven in His presence forever, and our victory in Christ Jesus over every evil and over Satan.  Hopefully we do not need angelic messengers to question us as though we were doubting!

Pastor Ed
