Psalm 135 begins just as Psalm 134, calling on the priests who serve in the house of the LORD to: Praise the LORD; in particular to praise the name of the LORD (v. 1). Verse 3 continues this theme:
Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; sing praises to His name, for it is lovely.
The name of choice in this psalm is YHWH – the ever-existing and covenant-keeping God, used 18 times.
Those two descriptions of The Name are the two themes of the remainder of the psalm. Verse 4 says that the covenant-keeping God has chosen Jacob (Israel) for Himself for His own possession, a Hebrew phrase that can also be translated: His special treasure. Verses 8-12 are specific examples of how LORD kept His covenant by protecting and providing for His special treasure, Israel. Then verses 13-18 are a testimony to YHWH as the ever-existing God, in contrast to the idols of the nations. In fact, verse 13 begins: “Thy name, O LORD, is everlasting.”
Join us this Sunday when we will praise the name of the Eternal Godhead with songs such as: How Great Thou Art and His Name Is Wonderful.
