Psalm 139

Psalm 139:1-6 speaks of how completely and intimately God knows us.  Two reasons God knows us perfectly are: first, we cannot go anywhere that He is not present (verses 7-12).  He made the universe, and He is not afraid to go anywhere in it, even in the darkness (vv. 11-12).  That being the case, He sees, hears, and knows everything about our lives.  Second, God made us – He formed us in our mother’s womb (verses 13-16).  He is the ultimate DNA bank – He designed it!  He even knows the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them (verse 16).

As we considered last week, God knows everything about us, including the ugliness of my sin.  Yet through faith in who Jesus is and in His death and resurrection to take away sin, we become His children – eternal sons of God our heavenly Father (Jn. 1:12; 2 Cor. 6:18).  This should cause us to get out the highlight pen, draw three stars, and ring the bells on Psalm 139 verse 17:

How precious also are Thy thoughts to me, O God!  How vast is the sum of them!

Sadly, we are often more concerned about what others think about us than what God thinks about us.  But what does God think about those who are His eternal children through faith in Christ?  Here are a few passages for your study to get you started; although indeed as the psalmist writes, you cannot number them (verse 18)!

  1. He loves me as His child (1 Jn. 3:1).
  2.  I am His heir and fellow heir with Christ, if I suffer with Him (Rom. 8:17).
  3.  I am valuable to Him (Gen. 1:27; Mt. 10:31; Ps. 8:5; Jn. 3:16).
  4. I am a new creature in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17).
  5. I am dead to sin and alive to Him (Rom. 6:11; Eph. 2:4-5).
  6. All of my sins are forgiven: past, present, and future (Col. 2:13).
  7. I am righteous in His sight with the righteousness of Christ (Rom. 4:5; 2 Cor. 5:21).
  8. I am utterly secure in my relationship to Him unto eternal life (Jn. 10:27-30; Rom. 8:35-39).
  9. I am being transformed into the likeness of His Son, Jesus, and unto glory (Rom. 8:29; 12:2).
  10.  I represent Him and His Son in the world (2 Cor. 5:20; 1 Pet. 2:9).
