Today, many people tell of their greatness using a tool called a resume. A typical resume tells of one’s educational, vocational, and civic accomplishments; special training qualifications; and any awards or other public recognitions. It’s often required as part of a job application, or may be used to provide metrics for a promotion or advancement of the company. Perhaps because it is often one of the primary tools in evaluating a candidate, many have fallen to the temptation to “pad” their resume – listing credentials and achievements that they did not actually achieve – with the hope of securing a more favorable review. Even some high-profile individuals in Christian ministry have followed the world in this dishonorable practice that amounts to fearing man more than God.
God’s resume is the incredible world that He has made and His mighty acts as recorded in Scripture (Psalm 145:4-6). As to His academic credentials – well, He is omniscient – He knows everything (Psalm 139). Enough said! Yet according to Psalm 145:3, God’s resume understates rather than overstates His greatness.
Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable.
That means we can never, in our finiteness, get to the end of God’s greatness. It’s beyond our ability to search it out. He alone is God; He alone is worthy of our highest praise. And one of the ways David the psalmist praises God is that he tells of God’s greatness to others (v. 6). Let us all purpose this week to tell someone of the greatness of our God.
